Policy Integrity submitted comments to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (“NRC”), responding to the agency's request for input on how it could improve its approach to addressing environmental justice. Policy Integrity’s comments advise the NRC to look to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s efforts to improve stakeholder engagement and consideration of environmental justice impacts and iterate our recommendations in the related proceedings. In particular, we highlight the benefits from robust public participation and share best practices for stakeholder engagement from the literature. Our comments to the NRC also recommend ways the Commission can improve its environmental justice analysis and incorporate the findings of that analysis into its review process under the National Environmental Policy Act, which are explained in more detail in our Summer 2021 report, Making Regulations Fair.
