Policy Integrity advisor Dr. Adam Finkel recently answered questions from Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) on regulations and their effect on jobs and businesses as part of testimony given during a House Commitee on Small Business hearing.
Asked about the unemployment rate and the complaints of small businesses on over-regulation, Dr. Finkel answered that the evidence for a direct connection between that rate and health safety and environmental regulations is “thinner than thin ice.” Dr. Finkel also explained that businesses that cause the problems created through externalities such as pollution and safety hazards will be natural losers when regulated, but this is balanced by companies that “take advantage of the market to provide the safe equipment [and] control pollution technology.”
