Letter to David Paterson re: regulatory review

More than ever before, state governments now undertake an ambitious range of regulatory programs and often become leaders on environmental, health, and safety policies. As states expand their regulatory reach, it becomes increasingly important to ensure that statewide regulatory decisions are efficient, consistent, fair, and justified.

So, when New York Governor David Paterson’s administration decided to rethink the state’s regulatory review structure, Policy Integrity was there to help refine the process and enhance the quality, equity, and efficacy of statewide regulations.

In a letter to the governor, Policy Integrity shared a list of principles for regulatory review, such as the need to adopt clear, substantive standards for review and the benefits of applying the review process to cases of regulatory inaction.

Members of the Policy Integrity team met with several senior individuals in the administration to discuss considerations, strategies, and options for the revision.
